It wasn't just Tiger Woods that imploded at the 2011 PGA Championship in August 2011. The whole generation that dominated golf in the opening decade of the 21st Century (let's call them the old guard) seemed to be slipping with him. They are being replaced by a gang of youngsters who have no fear of Tiger or his colleagues.
Tiger, of course, failed to make the cut for the final two rounds of the PGA Championship, something once-unimaginable for the man who appeared headed for the greatest achievements the game had to offer. It is still too early to dismiss Woods because at 35 he is still one of the youngest players that dominated the game early in the century. But his role as golf's most intimidating player certainly seemed to be in decline.
The old guard that accompanied him, finishing second and occasionally winning a tournament, also seems to be slipping back in the field. These days they are constantly being overshadowed, not by Tiger, but by the likes of Keagan Bradley and Jason Dufner, the two top finishers at Atlanta, Rory McIlroy, the 22-year-old Irish sensation, and late bloomers such as Luke Donald and Nick Watney who were leading the 2011 money derby in mid August.
