When the British Government's Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) abolished the UK Film Council on 1 April 2011, it consigned another attempt to revive the British film industry to history. The UK Film Council can now take its place alongside the likes of Goldcrest, Palace Pictures and PolyGram who all, tried and failed to create something resembling a sustainable film industry in Britain.

The multi-award, box office success of the King's Speech (2010), which received £1m financial support from the UK Film Council, came too late to convince the Government that the strategic body could help British films punch their weight amongst Hollywood blockbusters. Indeed, before the King's Speech there was no UK Film Council supported film in the all time top 20 UK Films.

According to the UK Film Council's own Research and Statistics Unit (RSU) the top earning British films at the box office were headed up by the feel good frolics of Mama Mia! (2008). Had the UK Film Council managed to guide more of its supported films to box office success, perhaps they might have earned a reprieve. However, it is worth remembering that the UK Film Council was never designed to act as a production company.
