In a small Tennessee town, the townsfolk concoct an event that will bring national publicity to the dying town and, with the publicity, hopefully more money. An influx of money is just what they want. Alleged is a drama set amidst the historic Scopes Monkey Trial that pitted science against religious ideology.

The Story of Alleged

In the story Charles Anderson (Nathan West) is a talented journalist whose father started the small newspaper in Dayton, Tennessee. His co-worker and fiancé Rose (Ashley Johnson) is also a very talented reporter. Rose has a sister, Abigail, who is half black, but nonetheless Rose considers her to be her true sister and only remaining family, with the exception of Rose’s uncle who is a doctor and wants to sterilize the young girl.

The town hatches a plan to say a teacher, Mr. Scopes, taught evolution to his class. Teaching evolution was against Tennessee’s Butler Act which made it a crime. This publicity could be the resurrection of the dying town.
